Representation class discussion

 Representation through"Social Class"

Today, during the class we had a short group discussion on how social class is presented in the media. We talked briefly beforehand about how people in the media portray the norm and set stereotypes when a certain group is portrayed a certain way and when in fact that media is consumed by the viewers often.

What is representation?

representation is the practice of reducing a group or individual to a limited set of preconceived ideas that already circulate about this group in society. This is common in genre-based narratives.

In representation, there will be a set of categories they fall into, which could be the following:
  • gender, sexuality
  • LGBT
  • Race, Ethnicity, and Religion
  • Age
  • Social Class
  • Disability
  • Place
The representation of such a character can either conform or subvert and can also be simple or complex.

Class Activity

In class, my group got the theme "social class" and here were some pre-conceived notions that we have seen from the media in regards to the theme. Everything noted down here is not a representation of our beliefs, just based on what we have seen from the media.
